A full day of sightseeing started with Laguna de Cuicocha, a stunning dark water lagoon nestled in a collapsed volcanic crater, located approximately 18km west of the small leather-working town of Cotacachi in the Cotacachi Cayapas Ecological Reserve. About 3km wide and 200m deep, the lake features striking cone-shaped islands, which shot up as a result of later volcanic erruptions. Since the elevation up here is a little over 10,000 ft. above sea level, we decided not to hike around the perimeter today! The water in the volcano was crystal clear.
Nearby to the volcano, our excursion host took us to Quiroga, a small town near Cotacachi where we visited the Kingdom Hall, home to a Spanish and native Kichwa language congregation.
Next we travelled to Parque Condor near Otavalo in the Andes mountains. This is a refuge for condors, hawks, falcons, eagles and owls.
Next we headed for Peguche Waterfall, about 3 km. from Otavalo in the mountains. Lots of hiking here over a swaying cable bridge to reach the beautiful falls.
